With the Supercharger network taking the forefront and now even the new Megacharger being announced, it’s easy to forget that Tesla has a third electric vehicle charging network: the Destination Charging network.
One of Tesla’s earliest partner for Destination Charging gives us an update on their expansion of the program.
While Tesla’s Supercharger network is made of DC fast-charging stations for long distance driving, the Destination Charging network consists level 2 chargers, more specifically the ‘Tesla Wall Connector’, installed at restaurants and hotels to charge once Tesla owners arrive at their destination, hence the name.
Back in October 2015, Hilton partnered with Tesla and GE to install EV charging stations at 100 U.S. hotels – becoming an early partner in the Destination charging program
Now they have told us that they have installed chargers at 194 properties across the U.S. with 144 of them having Tesla Wall Connectors – and an additional 86 properties are in the pipeline for next year.
Earlier this year, Tesla’s ‘Destination Charger’ locations reached a total of over 5,000 locations around the world.
Electrek’s Take
I think we need to encourage efforts like that, especially since Tesla makes it so easy.
We learned more about Tesla’s Destination charging program earlier this year and that they not only give out their own Wall Connectors, but they will also even install universal chargers for owners of other brands to use.
While we are particularly interested in the deployment of level 3 DC fast-charging stations, slower level 2 stations are still useful for cases were extended parking is expected like overnight at a hotel.
With Thanksgiving around the corner in the US, it can make the difference for EV owners when choosing their hotels.
They might not need to charge to get their destination, but they might need to charge overnight in order to get back.
More hotel chains should get onboard with that in a big way sooner than later otherwise they can expect to start losing business.
Here’s a list of all Tesla’s Destination chargers and Hilton’s properties with charging stations:
