When Porsche unveiled their Mission E concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2015, they promised that it would be available within a few years, would be a rival to the Tesla Model S in terms of range, size, and performance, and would be a “real Porsche.” Now, the German automaker—proud producer of highly sporting coupes, convertibles, sedans, supercars, and SUVs—is revealing more details that make good on those promises.
When it goes into production in 2019, Porsche says that the all-electric, battery-powered, all-wheel-drive, four-door will come in three trim levels, perhaps mimicking the nomenclature it currently applies to its gasoline-powered cars. If that were the case, the base car would be the Carrera, the mid-level car would be the Carrera S, and the top trim would be the Turbo. These monikers would reflect escalating power: 402 hp, 536 hp, and 670 hp, respectively. This would affect performance, and perhaps range. The base car is estimated to cost $75,000, and deliver 300 miles on a full charge. Sixty mph will arrive in 3.5 seconds, or less. These are definitely Tesla-esque numbers, but Porsche promises a more luxurious interior, and a proven history and longevity in building solid sporting vehicles.
Of course, if Tesla follows through on their lofty goals through 2019, it may release a new or highly upgraded Model S. And sporting, all-electric sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid, and others may provide the Mission E with additional competition. But a range of potent, everyday electric cars is exciting for enthusiasts, tech lovers, and the planet.
