Tesla Model 3 makes store debut to crowds in Century City, Los Angeles on January 12.

Glowing reviews keep rolling in for the Model 3 as it finally gets into regular customers' hands -- and one reviewer found that it's (a lot) faster than advertised. Meanwhile, one of the company's biggest detractors raved about the Model S.

Tesla's got it. Call it the next-thing buzz. But whatever that intangible is, it's invaluable in the tech industry because it pulls in new customers seemingly out of thin air, creates a bedrock of fans (not unlike a cult) and fuels capital raises while it buoys stock prices. And utterly defies the long, tortured analyses of critics, who have to keep rehashing old arguments every week about why the company will finally get its comeuppance from Wall Street or get squashed by competitors.

Before we get to the Model 3, let's begin with former vice chairman of General Motors Bob Lutz, the driving force behind GM's first-gen Chevy Volt (a car I own and love). Lutz is a notorious Tesla gadfly, who has been predicting the company's imminent demise for years.

He had some unexpected praise for the Model S, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A Model S, especially with the performance upgrades, is one of the fastest, best handling, best braking sedans that you could buy in the world today...The acceleration times will beat any $350,000 European exotic.

--Former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz, Los Angeles Times, January 19, 2018

Lutz was speaking to an audience of vintage-car collectors in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Thursday, according to the Times. Lutz added: "Twenty-five years from now, [the Model S] will be remembered as the first really good-looking, fast electric car. People will say ‘Too bad they went‎ broke.'"

Tesla buzz grows as Model 3 gets to regular customers

This week the buzz is getting louder as YouTube brims with videos of new Model 3 owners.

The one below I thought was one of the best because it's just a quiet, non-techie testament to the Model 3's technology and convenience:

The next one from Vehicle Virgins makes a couple of strong points at the beginning and end. "Without an ounce of marketing the Tesla Model 3 has sold itself like a new iPhone," the reviewer says.

And at the end the reviewer puts Tesla's advertised 0-to-60 in 5.1 seconds to the test.  The result: a surprising 4.4 seconds (13:00 mark).

"Once you sit in it, you'll never go back": the next video (below) is from a non-Tesla owner (a Los Angeles-based filmmaker) who has reserved a Model 3 but doesn't want to wait until "mid-2018" (when his Model 3 may or may not arrive) to drive one for the first time. As with most first-time drivers, Autopilot never fails to impress. "All in all, I can't recommend the car enough," the reviewer said (though, like everyone, he has a few quibbles).

Resell your Model 3 to CarMax? As an experiment, Ben Sullins from Teslanomics took his just-delivered $60,000 Model 3 to CarMax for an estimate. Result: an offer to buy it for $42,000. See his commentary starting at the 2:20 mark.
