Some of the hundreds of thousands of people who have reserved the twice-delayed Tesla Model 3 sedan are being invited to order and configure their vehicles — and Tesla said they should get the cars about a month after ordering.
Tesla’s not saying how many reservation holders have received the notices — but this is the first time such invitations have been extended to people who aren’t employees of the Palo Alto electric car maker or already Tesla owners, the company confirmed.
Timing of the invitations depends on when reservations were placed, according to Tesla. The company has said nearly half a million people have reserved the cars. Reservations require a $1,000 refundable deposit.
The firm led by CEO Elon Musk also confirmed why its own workers and existing customers had received priority for the sedan — Tesla employees got first shot as a reward for their work and to provide feedback on the vehicles during initial production, and owners of other Tesla models received prioritization out of gratitude for their patronage.
The Model 3, which starts at $35,000, represents Tesla’s attempt to bring electric vehicles to the mass-market, but it has been plagued by production delays.
Tesla is currently producing a $50,000 version of the Model 3, which comes with a premium battery providing an estimated 310-mile range. According to the company, it will in late 2018 introduce the option to order the standard-battery, $35,000 version, which gives an estimated 220-mile range.
Tesla’s promotional material indicates that people invited to order Model 3s, but wanting the entry-level version, will get priority when Tesla starts taking orders for the $35,000 cars.
“If you would like to wait for a version of Model 3 that is not yet in production, you can choose to hold your place in line and be notified when your desired options become available,” Tesla said on its website.
“The invitation to configure your Model 3 will have a link which will allow you to either configure your vehicle, or save your place in line and wait until later to order.”
