Toyota Prius Prime: Tesla ascending, Prius descending?

Tesla hit two milestones in production this week. Meanwhile, the Prius may be seeing a slow fade.

[For the week ending February 18, 2018]

Prius fade? One litmus test for the Model 3's mass-market appeal is whether it will convince the more affluent Toyota Prius owners to trade up to the new darling of the green-car movement. Neither the Prius nor Prius Prime (approx. 25 mile battery range) is a real (aka, full) electric car. That said, many Americans -- who don't necessarily obsess about the niceties of EVs -- still have a fuzzy idea of the Prius as an electric car.

At the risk of stating the obvious, if Tesla brings out even less expensive models in the coming years, it could become the new go-to green car -- and Prius surrogate -- for millions of Americans, not just the affluent (which, of course, is part of Elon Musk's Master Plan). Also, along these lines, see Baird comments at bottom.

A recent headline from Green Car Reports said "Toyota Prius hybrid sales have tanked: here are 4 reasons why" and went on to say:

But the sales arc of what has grown to be a family of Prius hybrid models in the U.S. has now turned sharply down: Last year's sales were half those of 2012...

Hybrid cars are now available from multiple makers and even the Prius is no longer considered cutting-edge advanced technology. That role has been taken over by plug-in electric cars...

The design of the latest Prius Liftback launched in 2015 is viewed as polarizing (if you're being polite) or perhaps hideous (if you're not)....

Bite Squad is testing the Model 3 for deliveries -- possibly replacing the Prius.

Then we have this headline from Teslarati: "Food delivery service turns to Tesla Model 3 in bid to replace Prius fleet and go emissions-free." A sign of a trend to come?

Here's an excerpt from the Bite Squad blog:

"This year we’re looking to go a little greener...We’ll be test driving the Tesla Model 3 in our home-office market of Minneapolis, Minnesota – a first step in an effort to transition our existing hybrid-electric fleet to fully electric vehicles in the coming years...

"Testing the groundbreaking Tesla Model 3 emphasizes Bite Squad’s commitment to leverage the latest in technology...."

Now about those two milestones.

Tesla Model 3 tracker: now about 1,000 Model 3s being made every week. You know a car has arrived when Bloomberg creates a Web page devoted to tracking its sales.

Here's what Bloomberg says: "We built our own model to estimate weekly output of the car that could make or break Elon Musk's master plan."

As of Sunday morning February 18: "Our best estimate is that Tesla has manufactured 7,317 Model 3s so far, and is now building approximately 1,052 a week." Those two numbers (7,317 and 1,052) are linked to live updates so will likely change often.

Here's the Bloomberg Model 3 Tracker page (needless to say, I have bookmarked it).

Tesla has manufactured 300,000 EVs: Electrek reports that "Tesla confirms having produced its 300,000th electric car."

Tesla is often seen as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer and it is in many ways, but not based on total vehicles produced – though it could soon take the lead.

The company confirmed that it recently produced its 300,000th vehicle.

After the end of last quarter, Tesla broke its quarterly delivery record with 29,870 vehicles during the fourth quarter.

--"Tesla confirms having produced its 300,000th electric car," Electrek, February 14, 2018.

And let's close with a positive analyst take on the Model 3.

Baird upbeat about Tesla: investment banking firm Baird is optimistic about Tesla and the Model 3.

"We believe TSLA now has better visibility into its production bottlenecks," the firm wrote in a note to investors, as reported by Barron's.

"Demand for the Model 3 could be underestimated" and “could accelerate with further positive reviews from early customers," according to the Barron's report.

Baird thinks that Tesla "could eventually sell more than 500,000 Model 3s annually. That would put it squarely among the nation’s top-selling vehicles," the report added.
