What's red and white and a rather unusual sight on Cincinnati's West Side?
A Tesla supercharger station.
Twelve futuristic-looking red and white superchargers popped up recently in the Meijer parking lot in the 6500 block of Harrison Avenue.
The station, right off of Interstate 74, is not yet operational, but Tesla says it will open sometime this year.
This is just the second grouping of charging stations in Greater Cincinnati for the all-electric line of Tesla vehicles. The other station is located at the Tesla Cincinnati dealership, 9111 Blue Ash Road.
"Green Township is exactly what Tesla is looking for" when it comes to charging locations, said Green Township Administrator Frank Birkenhauer. "We have about a million square feet of office space built in the last 10 years, and in the last five, we have built more single-family homes than anyone other than the city of Cincinnati."
Any Tesla owner can repower using the supercharger network, according to a company spokesman.
Tesla's mission is "to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy" and it saw significant growth in its supercharger network in 2017, according to the company's most recent quarterly report. Tesla added 338 new supercharger locations globally last year, increasing the total number of stations to 1,128.
Tesla vehicles start around $62,000 with the Roadster starting around $200,000. Tesla unveiled a semi last year, too.
Steve Harvey, a Fort Wright resident, owns a 2016 Model S.
"My wife and I do a lot of road trips to Chicago, so having one right off 74 now is great," Harvey said.
A Tesla spokesperson would not speculate when the West Side station will officially open.
