Freeport man arrested for armed robbery of Mobil gas station - WIFR

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Freeport man was arrested for allegedly holding up a Mobil gas station Friday morning.

Jose Martinez, 24, was arrested on several felony charges, including armed robbery, armed violence and theft with prior conviction.

Freeport police learned about an armed robbery around 12:45 a.m. at the Mobil located at 1111 S. West Ave.

After arriving, Freeport police collected a suspect description and followed directions from a customer, who reportedly was pursuing the armed robber after seeing the escape.

The suspect, later identified as Martinez, was spotted running through backyards, and found near the 600 block of W. Moseley Street.

Police say Martinez entered the gas station covered with a black mask and demanded money from the cashier by showing a fixed blade knife. He reportedly stole $345 from the gas station.

When arrested, Martinez was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections. His bond is set at $300,000 (10%).

Martinez is considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.
