Tesla Joins The Wireless Phone Charging Game With Its Own Qi-Enabled Charger - CleanTechnica

Tesla reached out to us today with news that it has launched its own Qi-enabled wireless phone charger for its Model 3. The new charger competes directly with the first-to-market Jeda Wireless Charger ($99), the recently introduced EV Annex Dual Qi Wireless Charging Pad ($89), and the Nomad ($130), at a price point of $125.

A Tesla spokesperson shared that the new Qi-enabled wireless charger was designed exclusively by Tesla, not procured from an external supplier. Like many of the popular wireless phone chargers for the Model 3, the Tesla-branded offering features a black non-slip silicone surface. The tacky surface will help hold your phone in place as you battle with Tesla’s traction control around all your favorite corners. Okay, let’s be honest, the car is still going to win and your phone will fall out of place, but it is a noble effort.

The new charger can wirelessly charge up your phone if it is Qi-enabled or has been equipped with a Qi-compatible case. That includes all of the iPhones from the 8 on up and many Android phones new and old. Check your phone’s specs before ordering, just to be sure.

Unlike many competing pads, the new Tesla wireless phone charger comes with a new lower bezel for the phone holster area. This was not a gap in the competing pads we have tested, but should offer a more factory-original fit and finish. Tesla’s product page for the new charger states that it will ship in 2-3 weeks — though, if you are in the market for one, it might be best to lock in an order now, as Tesla tends to let its store products go out of stock quite often.

The design of the new charger, ironically, highlights a constraint in the Model 3 — the number of USB ports underneath the display. For those considering the new charger, the dual USB dongles will eat up both factory ports without any consideration for a USB drive for Sentry Mode, a USB game controller, or a drive with music on it.
