Drilling Down: Exxon Mobil no signs of cooling off in Permian Basin - Chron.com

The dog days of summer are the hottest and Exxon Mobil is showing no signs of cooling off any time soon.

Exxon Mobil’s shale drilling arm XTO Energy is preparing for another round of drilling in the Permian Basin of West Texas. The company is seeking permission from the Railroad Commission of Texas to drill 20 horizontal wells split between Glasscock, Pecos and Midland counties.

Exxon Mobil has become the top driller in the state. So far this year, Exxon Mobil has filed for 500 drilling permits this year, compared to the 332 drilling permits EOG Resources of Houston, the second most active driller. More than 430 of Exxon’s permits are for projects in the Permian Basin.

Permian Basin

Denver oil company SM Energy continues to focus on the eastern end of the Permian Basin. The company filed for seven drilling permits on five leases in Howard County. The horizontal wells target the Spraberry formation at total depths ranging from 10,000 to 10,500 feet.

Houston exploration and production company Carrizo Oil & Gas is is seeking permission to drill seven horizontal wells on three leases in La Salle County. Located off FM 468 about six miles northwest of Cotulla, the wells target the Eagleville field of the Eagle Ford geological formation at total depths ranging from 11,000 to 12,000 feet.

Haynesville Shale

Dallas exploration and production company Hopewell Operating filed its first drilling permits for the year. The company is seeking permission to drill three horizontal wells on its JM Trosper A lease in Panola County. While most wells in the area seek natural gas, Hopewell plans to drill oil wells. The wells target the oil-rich Panola field at a total depth of 2,450 feet.

Barnett Shale

The Barnett Shale of North Texas has gone two weeks without a horizontal drilling permit, but Albany oil company Stasney Well Service is planning to drill three vertical wells. Split between two leases in Shackelford County, the wells target the Cook Ranch, Shackelford County Regular and Wildcat fields down to a depth of 2,000 feet.

Conventionals

Not everybody in the Permian Basin is doing horizontal drilling. Midland oil company Champion Lone Star Operating is planning to drill six vertical wells in Winkler County. The company is targeting the oil-rich Halley field on its Halley SM lease roughly eight miles south of Kermit.
