Bad News, Elon Musk: Survey Finds Most People Don’t Like How The Tesla Cybertruck Looks - Forbes

The Tesla Cybertruck has a stainless steel body, bulletproof glass and a towing capacity that puts it in competition for first in class. What it doesn’t have, according to a recently conducted survey, is many fans. Market research firm PiplSay polled 21,143 American consumers and found that just 29 percent of respondents had a positive response to the all-electric pick up truck.

This might come as a surprise, given the massive outpouring of interest in the Cybertruck following its announcement. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has regularly touted the pre-order figures for the vehicle, which isn’t expected to start production until late 2021. As of late November, Musk bragged that more than 250,000 people have reserved their vehicle in advance. The problem with these claims is that Tesla is only requiring people to put down $100 in advance in order to reserve their own Cybertruck. Additionally, the “down payment” is entirely refundable, so people can pull out at any time. Seeing as the truck won’t be available for at least two years, it seems likely that some of those people will decide against the truck — though it certainly leaves more time for additional pre-orders to be placed, as well.

Despite the fervor, likely largely driven by Tesla and Elon Musk’s very passionate fan base, PiplSay found that the average American consumer is less than enthused by the Cybertruck. While awareness isn’t an issue — 44 percent of people surveyed already knew about the Cybertruck when approached for the survey, and another one-forth of people had heard about the electric truck but hadn’t seen it — excitement was few and far between. Just 29 percent reacted positively, with one-in-five said it was “cool” and “futuristic” and nine percent believed it would “usher in a new era” of automobile design.

The remaining 71 percent of those surveyed had a negative or indifferent reaction, with the plurality dismissing the vehicle out of hand. A total of 27 percent were uninterested in the Cybertruck, with 16 percent saying they weren’t sure what to think of it and 11 percent laughing it off.

The remaining 44 percent gave the Tesla Cybertruck a negative review. Twelve percent of respondents viewed it as little more than a rich person’s play thing, 11 percent didn’t see the need for a bulletproof truck, 11 percent simply couldn’t relate to the use case for the truck and 10 percent said that Tesla’s focus should be on bringing down the cost of electric vehicles rather than reinventing car design and upending the familiar bodies of pick up trucks.

If there is one bright spot in the survey for Tesla, it’s that people do seem open to Musk’s unconventional design — but only if he makes it smaller. According to PiplSay, 46 percent of people said they would be excited by a smaller version of the Cybertruck, and 18 percent of those said they would be interested by a version of the vehicle with a different design. Even still, 54 percent of respondents were still disinterested, with 32 percent saying not even a smaller version would entice them and 22 percent saying that they just don’t care about the electric vehicle.
