This Friday, the Brookside Mini Mart in Wilton is saying “thank you” to first responders, by offering them a free lunch.
For every sandwich purchased this week, the store is offering a boxed lunch to the members of the Wilton Police Department and Wilton Ambulance, as well as staff at the Monadnock Community Hospital.
“I just like helping the community,” Manager Karen Hickerson said. “I want to do this, I want to help out and give back to them, because they’re here for us all the time, every day, not just now.”
The Brookside Mini Mart has been a community partner in other ways, Hickerson said, donating stock to the local schools for students without snacks, and helping to collect toys for Christmas charity drives. Hickerson said the Wilton store was selected to be one of three stores owned by their parent company to run a drive to donate to local first responders.
Hickerson said the Brookside Mini Mart, as with many retail stores which have been allowed to stay open, have seen a major reduction in customers, but when she put out the word that the store would match every sandwich bought with a donated lunch, people responded.
“We’re not anywhere near as busy as we were, but when I put it up on Facebook on Saturday, we sold 18 sandwiches that day. That’s big right now,” Hickerson said.
Sandwich sales through the rest of the week will be matched with donated lunches, which will be distributed on Friday.
