Letter: Musk’s antics lose Tesla one potential customer - Financial Times

As a northern California resident, I found Elon Musk’s staged outrage over the shelter-in-place restrictions both misplaced and offensive (“Tesla’s mad genius defies US lockdown”, Person in the News, May 16).

A recent study by Raj Chetty and his Harvard colleagues for the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that much of the decline in economic activity in US states was already happening before states shut down. Likewise, no economic recovery is likely to be especially strong until the coronavirus is better contained and public anxiety subsides.

Under these circumstances, Mr Musk’s decision to throw a juvenile tantrum towards state and local public health officials — who according to preliminary studies were responsible for saving thousands of lives — seems amazingly selfish.

That he may be trying to gain Tesla a place on the S&P 500 through restarting his factory as soon as possible, if true, is simply another example of his putting self-regard over worker safety.

As we emerge from this crisis I plan to support firms that showed solidarity with the sacrifices of many other businesses, large and small, in shutting down for the greater good. That will mean putting Tesla cars firmly on the “do not buy” list.
