Ren’s Mobil, a local gas station in Amherst that has been around since the 1970s, has decided to close in response to the increase in gas prices.
According to AAA, the average gas price on Monday is $5.01 and Massachusetts has topped the national average with $5.04. These numbers starkly contrast the average gas prices from one year ago that were approximately two dollars less.
Reynold Gladu, the owner of the gas station, has consistently tried to keep the gas prices of his station lower than others, despite impeding on his own profit, reports the Daily Hampshire Gazette. However, with gas prices soaring, he said he believes he can’t keep helping Mobil profit off of those in his community.
According to Jeff Gladu, the station manager and the owner’s son, Mobil turned a record profit last quarter, squeezing him, his father and their customers dry.
“[Mobil is] just being greedy,” Jeff Gladu states. “If thats the way [Mobil is] going to play, we aren’t going to do it anymore.”
At the beginning of May, the station paid $16,480 for 5,000 gallons of gas. A few weeks later, that price increased to $23,484.
“It’s hard enough for people to put groceries on their table after working in the factory or wherever they work for 30-40 hours a week and not be able to put gas in their car and get to work. I don’t want to be part of that,” Reynold Gladu told Western Mass News.
Although the gas station will continue their repair business and to sell used cars, the future of the station remains unknown. However, the community is fighting for them to stay open.
Since news broke of the gas station closing their pumps, several major news outlets have interviewed and written about the Amherst gas station, causing Mobil to send the local distributors’ boss to convince them to start selling gas. The Gladus refused, asking to be let out of their contract so they can work with another supplier who might have better prices.
Jeff Gladu says that they have been “off the wall crazy” with the community “doing all they can to keep us in business.” In fact, an individual at a local university offered the Gladu’s $100,000 to find another supplier.
“People in this community love my dad so much that they want to give us their own personal money to keep us open,” Jeff Gladu states.
However, the fame and publicity isn’t why Reynold Gladu closed the pumps, his son states. Rather, it was because “he wants to take care of the average consumer” and “he was standing up for something that was right.”
