MOTORISTS were dealt more pain at the pumps when Mobil Oil Marianas on Thursday raised its regular and premium gasoline prices by 15 cents a gallon and the price of diesel by 20 cents a gallon.
The regular gas price went up to $6.41 a gallon from $6.26 a gallon; the premium gas price rose to $6.86 a gallon from $6.71 a gallon; and the price of diesel shot up to $7.08 a gallon from $6.88 a gallon.
Shell is expected to follow suit.
Tinian Fuel Services had not changed its prices as of 3 p.m. Thursday but would do so today, according to a cashier.
After the fuel price hike last month, the price of regular gas on Tinian was still $8 a gallon, and that of diesel was $8.69 a gallon.
Calvo Enterprises on Rota also had not raised its prices as of 3 p.m. Thursday. Its regular gas price was still $7.74 a gallon and the diesel, $10.52 a gallon. But its cashier said they would most likely increase their prices today.
Indigenous Affairs Office Program Manager Crispin Ogo, who is originally from Rota, said since fuel prices continue to increase, he has started to plan his daily routines so he won’t need to drive too much around the island.
"I now monitor my destinations," he said.
Those who live in Kagman like him will “suffer” because many of them work in the island’s commercial districts.
“That is why people should drive only when it is necessary or when there are important occasions they have to attend,” Ogo said.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that in the U.S., the national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas was about 14% above the pre-2022 high set in 2008.
Forbes, for its part, noted that “oil prices extended a bull run Tuesday after the EU agreed to a partial and phased ban on Russian oil and China lifted some of its coronavirus restrictions amid rising demand for gasoline ahead of the peak summer driving season.”
According to Forbes, “International benchmark Brent crude surged over $124 a barrel — its highest since March 9 — before dropping back to $117 a barrel on Wednesday. By breaking through $120, from a technical trading perspective, crude is now more likely to climb toward $150 than retreat under $100.”
Benchmark U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude is now trading around $118, also the highest since March 9, Forbes added.
