A Rye Police Department undercover operation at the Chestnut Mobil Station of Theodore Fremd Avenue Wednesday evening has resulted on one DWI arrest and 16 other violations.

DWI Arrest

An undercover officer working as an employee in Chestnut Market observed a suspected intoxicated male enter the store make a purchase and get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Members of the detail were alerted and initiated a traffic stop in Depot Plaza. Andrew Burton Jacobs, age 42, of Rye, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. All tickets issued to Jacobs are returnable to the Rye City Court on December 6 , 2022.

16 Other Violations

In addition to the DWI arrest, Rye PD issued 16 other violations between the hours of 5:00pm and 11:00 pm during the undercover “Cops in Shops” operation at the Mobil station. Forty seven subjects were checked for proper identification and were of legal age to purchase alcoholic beverages. Eleven ABC (alcoholic beverage control) violations were issued to eight youths. Five vehicle and traffic summonses were issued by the detail. Seven fraudulent driver’s licenses were seized.

“Cops in Shops” is an undercover operation in which police officers in plain clothes pose as customers or store employees in order to detect under aged persons attempting to purchase, using false identifications to obtain alcoholic beverages or alcohol theft.
