The driver of a Tesla has died after crashing into a parked fire truck on Interstate 680 near Walnut Creek, according to the Contra Costa Fire Department.
The driver of the Tesla was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital with “major injuries.”
Four firefighters were inside the fire truck when it was struck. All four were taken to the hospital for evaluation although it does not appear any of them suffered major injuries. KRON4 reported that all four firefighters had their seatbelts on when the crash occurred.
The crash took place on northbound I-680 near Walnut Creek at 3:54 a.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 18. The fire truck had been on the scene assisting with an earlier accident. According to a Facebook post from California High Patrol, the fire engine “was stopped at the rear of the scene to protect personnel and assist in diverting traffic.”
At this time, it is unknown whether the Tesla was using driver assistance technology. The electric car company, which is owned by controversial billionaire Elon Musk, recently recalled over 360,000 cars that had been using the “Full Self-Driving” system. It was also unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
In a Twitter post announcing the fatal crash, the Contra Costa Fire Department implored drivers to “slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles.”
CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it to call 925-646-4980.
