Possible Bearish Signals With Exxon Mobil Insiders Disposing Stock - Simply Wall St

In the last year, many Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Exxon Mobil Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the VP, Principal Accounting Officer & Controller, Leonard Fox, for US$1.3m worth of shares, at about US$105 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$114. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 5.6% of Leonard Fox's holding.

In the last year Exxon Mobil insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!
