A Better New-Gen Tesla Model 3 Variant Is Coming Soon - MotorTrend

After what seems like an eternity, Tesla has finally given its ubiquitous Model 3 sedan a refresh. With a new look, retuned suspension, overhauled interior, and more, Tesla's entry-level EV is substantially improved. Only Tesla isn't finished with the 3 quite yet—you might have noticed that, among the new Model 3s, one version is missing: The Model 3 Performance.

That's about to change. After the Model 3 Standard Range RWD and Dual Motor Long Range AWD versions launch in early 2024, Tesla will resurrect the Performance trim, which tops the outgoing 3 range. Car Sales (via Sawyer Merritt) recently reported Tesla Australia Chief Engineer Daniel Ho confirming that a new Model 3 performance is coming in the first half of next year. According to Tesla, the upcoming Model 3 Performance will be "pretty special," though we wouldn't expect the company to call it boring. The current Model 3 Performance has very impressive specs as it is, so we are certainly curious to see how much further Tesla's engineers can push it, particularly given how the other updated 3s use carryover powertrains and batteries. Will the Performance do the same, or will it get deeper changes?

When the first Model 3 Performance was revealed, Tesla said that it "left a few things on the table" during development a time in which Elon Musk described as "development hell." Perhaps the Model 3 Performance's dual motors still have a wealth of untapped headroom. That could be what Tesla is suggesting. We doubt that Tesla would push the 2024 Model 3 Performance to Model S Plaid-like numbers, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that a power increase of some kind could be on the table.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance likley won't look much different than the regular "Highland" versions that were just released, but it may have upgraded cooling ducts (which were erased from the Highland's nose for better aero and looks) to support the increased performance. We're also very curious if Tesla can manage to increase range while also increasing performance and what concessions—if any—it will have to make to achieve that. Will it have a larger, heavier battery pack? Or can Tesla achieve everything it wants to with current equipment but with updated software? There are a ton of questions to be answered but rest assured we're going to stick with this story as it develops.
