Tesla connected to two North American expansion rumors - Not a Tesla App

Tesla gets a dedicated lane at the border

Elon Musk has stated that "at least 10 or 12 Gigafactories" will be able to produce 1.5 to 2 million vehicles each, or about 20 million vehicles annually. There are currently five Gigafactories worldwide, including three in the United States. Tesla is seemingly ramping up efforts to build two more Gigafactories in North America after a Musk spotting in Mexico and another job opening in Canada.

Media outlets in Nuevo León, Mexico, circulated photos of Musk with a state official and the state governor's wife. The state borders Texas; it gave Tesla suppliers their own lane at the border in June. An apparent gesture that Nuevo León welcomes Tesla with open arms.

It is an obvious location for the company, with at least six suppliers working in the state. The economy minister of Nuevo Leon, Ivan Rivas told Bloomberg that 5 to 7 percent of investment in the state would come from the EV industry in 2022.

The state is pro-business and has the population to support an extensive facility. More than 5 million people are in the state, including nearly 1.5 million in the state's largest city, Monterrey. It is also one of the highest educated populations in Mexico.

Nuevo León's Governor, Samuel García Sepúlveda, and several other high-ranking state officials toured Tesla Gigafactory in Texas in April. "We have come to endorse this agreement, that all the assembly, products and all the export of cars that are made in California and in Texas (from Tesla) are going to cross the Colombia Bridge," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, another exciting job has appeared on the Tesla careers page in Quebec, Canada. At the same shareholder meeting where Musk said he wanted 10 to 12 more Gigafactories, he asked the crowd where they should be located. "We get a lot of Canada," he said, and "I'm half Canadian, so maybe I should?"

It appears that Tesla's recruiting efforts are escalating in Quebec. In September, the company posted a recruiter position in Montreal, and now a Recruiting Coordinator posting in Laval. The job details state the successful candidate will work closely with high-volume recruiters in a fast-paced organization.

Over the summer, there was rampant speculation that the great white north would get a Gigafactory. It was revealed that Tesla met with the Canadian government four times in six months. Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, stated the country is ramping up efforts to become an EV powerhouse. He was recently asked about the Telsa rumors and said, "stay tuned."

Tesla has started to roll out its latest update — 2022.40.1

Tesla owners who are dog lovers no longer have to decide between Sentry Mode and Dog Mode. That is just one of several enhancements in the latest update — 2022.40.1.

Other improvements include battery preconditioning, driver door unlock and radio station logos, while existing features have launched in new regions.

New Features

Let's start with the Sentry and Dog Mode combo. Both of these features would rate high on items that Tesla owners appreciate about their vehicles. Sentry is a best-in-class security/surveillance system, and Dog Mode keeps the cabin at an appropriate temperature for your pet while you are away.

However, the two systems did not work together because Sentry would constantly be triggered whenever the dog moved inside the vehicle. For those who have dogs that love car rides, this meant not being able to use Sentry to protect your car and your dog. Now both features can be used together for most vehicles. This update silences Sentry Mode alarms while still recording and keeping the temperature safe for your pooch.

Listening to the radio may get more appealing with the addition of radio station logos to the media player.

The radio in a Tesla doesn't get a lot of recognition since competes against music streaming services and other entertainment that have much more engaging screens, but Tesla did a great job with its radio implementation.

The radio will automatically scan for local stations, so you can just tap to get to your favorite station. It also offers a direct input instead of a radio dial and now features radio station icons to make it easier to find your favorite station. With this update the list of radio stations has been changed to a grid to make room for the station name and logo. When playing an FM radio station, the station's logo will also appear in the album artwork area of the music player. (Photo credit to ArsalamiSandwich).

Tesla will now display radio stations logo in the media player

Voice directions are now available in Hebrew in the Middle East. Tesla continues to expand the languages offered in its vehicles. It's estimated that 9 million people speak Hebrew worldwide.

Improvements to Existing Features

In an effort to speed up charging times, the thermal system control will now be optimized to match the charging station's power capability. The company has been expanding its vast network of Superchargers, which means there are many variations in the station output. This update means your Tesla won't waste too much energy preparing the battery if you're headed to a slower DC charging station.

Update 2021.44 added the ability to only unlock the driver's door when the handle is pressed to improve safety. However, it wasn't ideal when traveling with passengers as they would have to wait until you get into the vehicle to open the other doors.

With update 2022.40, Tesla did what it does best — improve vehicle features. If you have the Driver Door Unlock Mode feature on, you can now hold the door handle open for a second if you prefer to unlock all vehicle doors.

If this update Tesla is also adding this feature to the new Model S.

To access Driver Door Unlock Mode, tap Controls > Lock > Driver Door Unlock Mode.

More vehicles and regions now have access to a consistent regenerative braking feel even when it's limited. For example, regenerative braking may not be available when the battery is at a max charge or in certain weather conditions. In May 2022, Tesla sent out an update to many areas and vehicles, allowing the car to behave the same way when it is decelerating with or without regenerative braking. This feature enables drivers to perfect the one-foot driving technique at all times.

With this update, it is now available for some legacy Model S and Model X vehicles.

With winter coming, the Tire Configuration program is now for the Model Y as well. It allows users to reset the learned tire settings after a tire rotation or replacement for an improved driving experience. To reset, tap Controls > Service > Wheel & Tire Configuration > Tires.

Other changes include exterior lighting improvements and Sentry Mode Live Camera Access added to Israel, Supercharger details included in China, and Boombox is now available in Japan. However, Hong Kong went against the trend as it continues to allow fewer features. The dashcam viewer has been removed, the country recently took away Tesla's arcade and Toybox.

Tesla update 2022.40.1 has just begun rolling out and it's available on less than 1% of Tesla's vehicles (why Tesla doesn't update all vehicles at once).

Tesla revamps its referral program in China

Tesla cancelled the popular Loot Box in 2021, but the referral program may return. Tesla used Weibo to announce the launch of a new program in China — Treasure Box.

The post encourages Tesla owners to recommend the product to friends for the opportunity to open the Treasure Box and win prizes. This move comes just days after references to the new referral program were found in the latest app update.

The buyer and the person who refers them to Tesla get 3,500 credits each. A loyalty program also awards 7,000 credits to current Tesla owners when they purchase another Tesla. Twitter user @Tesla_Mania, located in Shanghai, China, has posted several screen grabs and videos of the Treasure Box.

Referral credits can be cashed in for items like a Cyber Rodeo t-shirt (1,900 credits), Cybertruck socks (1,300 credits), Cybertruck hat (1,400 credits) a Tesla tote bag (500 credits), a Tesla umbrella (2,000 credits), My First Tesla Model Y (6,000 credits), a Tesla Tumbler (1,700 credits), and TeslaMic (12,000 credits) are just a few on the list.

It appears the credits can be used for Supercharger miles as well. Referrals are also entered for annual draws with bigger prizes. These drawings will award people with a VIP Tour of Giga Shanghai, a Model 3/Y RWD for 12 months, or Full Self-Driving for 24 months.

The Treasure Box announcement comes on the same day that Tesla lowered prices and just a few days after introducing incentives to those who bought the company's insurance. Tesla is ramping up efforts in China as it's currently third in electric vehicles behind BYD Motor and SAIC-GM-Wuling.

A similar referral program may also start to show up in the North American market. Perhaps that is why there is a reference to it in the latest Tesla mobile app. As we reported, @TeslaAppUpdates iOS found some interesting code, "Okay one string that may provide some insight referral_share_sheet_refer_text': 'Use my referral link to purchase a Tesla product and get free credits you can redeem for awards like Supercharging miles, merchandise and accessories.'"

Elon Musk used his experience at X.com to reward users with cash cards for signing up and more cards for referring new users. That method translated to Tesla's referral program awarding an estimated eighty yet-to-be-produced Roadsters. The company cancelled the program more than a year ago, but if China's Treasure Box is any indication, the program will be back, albeit with smaller rewards.
