Tesla V4 Superchargers: Power, Design and Cable Length Revealed - Not a Tesla App

By Kevin Armstrong

Tesla's V4 Superchargers are capable of speeds up to 600kW

Tesla has opened the first V4 Superchargers, which appear to have the potential to be twice as powerful as the model it replaces. The world is starting to learn more about this newest addition to Tesla's portfolio of DC fast-charging stations. Tesla started constructing its first fourth-generation Superchargers in the Netherlands earlier this month and officially opened them up to the public on March 15th.

Further details regarding the Supercharger V4's capabilities are now available courtesy of a recent peek at the new charging station by nearby Tesla owners. According to the charger's electric car specifications, it has a maximum power output of 600 kW and a maximum current of 615A at 1,000V.

This is the potential maximum for the new Supercharger V4, even if the highest-rated power is rarely maintained. The current restriction is at the level of the vehicle, as most, or potentially all Teslas today cannot manage to be charged at those levels.

This development might provide a glimpse into Tesla's upcoming electric vehicle ambitions. At Tesla's Semi delivery event, Tesla revealed that the Tesla Semi and Cybertruck would be the vehicles that would be able to take full advantage of Tesla's upcoming V4 Superchargers.

Longer Cables and Lights in V4 Superchargers

Although V4 Superchargers feature a simpler design, the TESLA lettering on the new Superchargers does light up to make the Superchargers easier to spot.

The cables at V4 Superchargers are also significantly longer than in previous generations. Tesla's previous Superchargers included fairly short cables that are about 6.5 feet (2m) long, but for V4 they've extended the length of the cables to almost 10 feet (3m) to make it easier to charge various types of vehicles.

During Investor Day, Tesla confirmed increasing manufacturing in preparation for a swift rollout. The new charger is projected to offer a higher charge rate than the Supercharger V3's existing 250 kW ceiling for existing vehicles. They will also likely have a solution for CCS charging compatibility for electric vehicles not made by Tesla, by having a built-in Magic Dock in the U.S.

Judge Demands Investigation Details in Tesla Racial Discrimination Lawsuit

A judge has ruled that the California Civil Rights Department must provide details of its investigation into alleged race discrimination at Tesla's main assembly plant before proceeding with a lawsuit against the electric vehicle maker. Reuters is reporting the decision by California Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo could allow Tesla to limit the scope of the lawsuit filed last year.

Under California law, the Civil Rights Department is required to investigate worker discrimination complaints before suing employers. If it is found that certain claims against Tesla were not investigated, the company may attempt to have them excluded from the case. The department accuses Tesla's Fremont plant of being a racially segregated workplace where Black employees face harassment, discrimination in job assignments, discipline, and pay.

Tesla Denies Allegations

Tesla denies these allegations, calling the lawsuit politically motivated. Although the department can challenge Grillo's ruling at a hearing, judges cannot significantly alter their tentative decisions. The Civil Rights Department and Tesla have not immediately commented on the matter.

In a related development, Judge Grillo dismissed Tesla's countersuit in January, which claimed that the agency failed to inform Tesla of the allegations or offer a chance to settle before filing the lawsuit in February 2022. Grillo stated that Tesla could present those arguments in its defense.

There are additional ongoing lawsuits in California courts accusing Tesla of allowing discrimination and sexual harassment at its factories. Tesla denies any wrongdoing. In April 2022, a federal judge in Oakland reduced a jury award from $137 million to $15 million for a Black worker who claimed racial harassment. The worker rejected the reduced amount, opting for a new trial on damages set to begin on March 27.

New Model S cars feature a glass roof that is lighter and lets in five times more light than previous versions

Tesla has quietly refreshed its Model S vehicles, introducing a new "high-visibility glass roof," improved brake pads, and many other features. In an email to owners, the company lists several new tweaks to the latest Model S.

The new, Ultra Red paint grabbed all the attention. Tesla unveiled its high-chroma color and multi-layered paint process, delivering an exceptionally vibrant finish. But several other features in that Ultra Red launch video (below) are worth just as much attention.

Let the Sun Shine in - Not the UV

The new and improved panoramic roof for the Model S lets in more light and provides a clearer view of the sky, day or night, according to the message from Tesla. The new glass roof weighs less than the previous version and lets in five times more light, while still providing the same level of heat and UV protection. According to Tesla, the new roof also improves handling by lowering the center of gravity.

In addition, Tesla has integrated its new hardware 4 computer for Autopilot and self-driving capabilities, and the Model S now offers a free option of a round steering wheel.

New Brakes Put to the Test

Tesla's vehicle updates are always highly anticipated; the latest refresh is no exception. The improved brake pads with higher thermal capacity are designed to improve the Model S Plaid's braking performance.

Tesla announced the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit in late 2021, but it is still not available for purchase. Tesla says they will be available in "early 2023." The kit costs $20,000 and is said to make the Model S Plaid a true monster on the track.

Although the ceramic brake kit isn't available to the public yet, test driver Sebastian Vittel raced a Model S Plaid taking on the Circuit de Bresse race track in France with the new performance brakes (video below). Despite the track being best suited for small, nimble cars, the Model S Plaid with the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit was able to set a track record for street-legal cars on non-semi-slick tires with a lap time of 1:33.610. This record was set with the vehicle's original tires, indicating that the brakes were a significant factor in the vehicle's impressive performance.

Tesla's latest refresh of the Model S includes new features like a high-visibility glass roof, improved brake pads, and the integration of hardware 4 for Autopilot and full self-driving capabilities. The Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit's impressive performance on the track demonstrates Tesla's dedication to enhancing the vehicle's driving experience. Tesla remains at the forefront of the electric vehicle industry with their continuous improvement and innovation.
